Five years ago, in late 2009, Dusan Babich and Mike Welham had an idea: creating an app that would simplify data collection and eliminate the need for paperwork.
Instead, businesses would use a smartphone or tablet to capture data and seamlessly send it to the destination of their choice—dropbox, email, box, etc.
And so Device Magic was born.
Today we’re excited to announce another major milestone: the launch of our new mobile form designer.
A Quick Tour of The New Mobile Form Builder
Last week we shared a sneak peek of the new mobile forms builder—this week you can actually log in and give it a try!
With the new mobile form builder our focus was on ease of use and making the process of building forms for your smartphone or tablet more intuitive.
When you use the mobile form builder for the first time you’ll notice it uses a 3 column layout.
On the left is your “menu.” The menu features a list of all the various form fields you can choose from.
In the center is a simplified version of the form you’re working on, listing each of the form fields you’ve already added.
There are two ways to add a form field.
1. You can click on the form field you’d like to add and it will automatically add it to the bottom of your form.
2. You can drag and drop the form field right where you want it.
You’ll notice the drag-and-drop feature now works much more smoothly than it did with the old interface; it’s much easier to get the fields precisely where you want them.
You can also use the drag-and-drop feature to reorder items in your form, if needed.
Finally, the third column is where you input specific information and customize each form field. In the example shown in the screen shot above, we’re customizing a “Free text” field called “Name of Owner” (highlighted in blue in the center/form column).
We’re working on an in-depth tutorial of all the form field types and the options you can use to customize these, but for those users who previously used the old form builder, this process will be fairly familiar.
How To Enable The New Mobile Form Builder For Your Account
Starting today, you can actually enable the new form builder for your own account. The process is super simple and will take less than 5 minutes.
- Login to your organization’s Device Magic account.
- Click on the “Forms” tab at the top of the screen.
- Click on the large green button that says “Enable New Designer.”
And that’s it! You’ll be all set to start using the new designer; just click “+ New Form” and give it a try.
What To Do If Something Goes Wrong…
We’ve done extensive testing both in house and with a select group of beta users to ensure the new form builder is ready for you—but as with any new feature, there’s always a chance you’ll be the first to find a way to break it.
If you run into ANY problems with the form builder or need help figuring out how to create your form, please contact support and we’ll get back to you as quickly as possible.
Not Ready to Switch Yet? No Problem
What if you’re familiar with the old mobile form builder and aren’t ready to switch yet? No problem; you’ll have until the end of the year.
If you know you’ll need to build a new form or forms in the near future and want to use the old platform, you can just choose “Ignore” in the pop up box on the forms page.
You’ll be able to enable the new form builder anytime between now and the end of the month by navigating to your organization settings. The organization settings button is located on your dashboard, within the blue box on the right hand side of that screen.
Then, at the end of the December we’ll officially move any remaining accounts over the new form builder.
